The Best And Worst Foods To Eat For Your Teeth

We all love to eat. It’s the flavour of life. But sometimes the things we put in our mouths can be harmful to us.

It’s much better to understand why you cannot eat something than to be told you mustn’t eat it. Here’s a quick list of foods that could impact the health of your teeth:

It all comes down to plaque

Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that covers the surfaces of all your teeth. Even worse, bacteria rely on the minuscule amounts of sugars and starches left over after our meals to grow, which in turn causes acids to form. These acids attack your teeth, and over time, cause tooth decay.

Luckily there are foods you can eat, that will help against the formation of plaque.

Foods you should eat:

  • Fibre-based (Fruits and Veggies)

Foods with fibre have a cleansing effect in your mouth, which get saliva flowing. Saliva is a great natural defence against cavities and gum disease, and helps to reduce the effects of the acids and enzymes attacking your teeth.

  • Dairy

The calcium found in milk, cheese and other dairy-based products help to repair the minerals in your teeth that might have been lost due to the presence of plaque. When it comes to these types of food, yoghurt and cheese are great choices.

  • Fluoride

Normally drinking water is fluoridated, which means that drinking it, or making teas or other drinks with it will help your teeth’s overall health. Some commercially prepared foods also often have a good dose of fluoride in them, such as grapes, pickled cucumbers and spinach.

Foods you should avoid:

  • Lollies – or anything with refined sugar

Unfortunately, lollies are bad for you. You probably know this already. But lollies, caramels, or any other sweet products that contain refined sugars can cause an increased amount of plaque in your mouth.

  • Starch

Certain breads and potato crisps can get trapped between your teeth, and if they remain there for a while, the bacteria that form can attach to these food particles and produce acids that destroy your teeth.

  • Soft drinks

While they can taste great, most carbonated drinks have a lot of added sugar in them, and even worse, most soft drinks contain phosphoric and citric acids that have a negative effect on your tooth enamel.
