I’m scared I need lots of dental work, what do I do?

Here at Carnegie Dental Group we receive a lot of new patients that are worried that they need an extensive amount of dental work and don’t have the time, money or nerves to do it.

Far too often, people worry that their teeth are so bad they will need to have them all extracted and replaced, or they need so much work they will get in trouble and never go back.

We’re here to tell you, that is not the case!

People often forget that dentists are people too; we understand that life happens, emergency expenses, holidays, celebrations, new cars, children and lifestyle choices all get in the way of frequent 6 monthly check-ups. We understand that many people have not been to the dentist for a check-up and clean for 1,2,3,5 or more years… we wish it wasn’t the case, but we understand. And we don’t judge you for it.

The dental team at Carnegie Dental Group are here to help correct any negative dental developments for all patients. Without judgement. Our passion for dentistry stems from wanting to stop people from suffering; we want to remedy your problems so you don’t have to worry anymore, and, because we believe in keeping as many of your natural teeth in place as possible we will only recommend treatments that you need, rather than just pull all of your teeth out and replace them with dental implants.

A dental check-up and clean is not a commitment to more treatment

Many people put off a check-up and clean because they think they will then be locked in to further treatment. That is definitely not the case. When you visit for a check-up and clean there are a number of things we do:

1. We conduct a comprehensive check-up and examination

During this check-up we look for issues on the visible parts of your teeth, gums and soft tissues in your mouth. We also conduct oral x-rays to check the health of your tooth roots and bone. This is done to ensure there are no problems inside the tooth that will lead to further damage.

Yes, we do poke your teeth and gums a little during this process, this is to ensure we do not miss any issues related to gum health or decay residing under plaque and tartar, but trust us, we do not do this to cause you pain.

2. We clean your teeth

During the clean we remove plaque and tartar that has built up on your teeth. Much of this plaque and tartar can only be removed at a dental appointment as brushing and flossing alone cannot remove it.

3. We advise you on any dental work that would be beneficial for your oral health

After examining your mouth and cleaning your teeth we will walk you through step by step any issues. We will provide you all of the options available for treatment including costs, timing, effectiveness and the recommended order. You aren’t locked in to any of the suggested treatments. It is entirely up to you to decide if you would or wouldn’t like to undergo further treatment.

If, for whatever reason, you decide not to undergo dental treatment immediately, or you are going to put it off to a time when you have the finances to do so, please be aware that we work with DentiCare to provide payment plans for some treatments and would be happy to discuss this with you.

If you have been putting off a dental appointment for fear you have a lot of treatment to undergo, we strongly recommend at least booking in for a check-up and clean so you are aware of your dental situation. You never know, your oral health could be better than you think!
