Inlay / Onlay Melbourne

Inlay & Onlays Melbourne | How We Help to Protect Teeth

This restorative treatment is stronger than a filling and more conservative than a dental crown. Tooth coloured reinforced glass or resin provides a strong and durable restoration in those teeth which may require the extra support. Unlike direct fillings inlay/onlays Melbourne are fabricated in a laboratory and bonded in one week after preparation and impressions are taking.

The difference between an inlay and an onlay is: an inlay is the material bonded within the centre of the tooth. An onlay is when the damage or decay requires inclusion of one or more cusps of the tooth or full coverage of the biting surface.

5 Advantages of Inlays/onlays Melbourne

These restorative treatments have a number of advantages for the health of your teeth. Here are five of them:

1. Tooth coloured
Inlays and onlays, being created from composite resin, can be colour matched to your teeth and are stain-resistant.

2. Superior fit
Inlays and onlays are a conservative treatment which aims to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible. Because they can be colour-matched and because they are stronger than fillings they are an excellent choice for treating minimal to moderate tooth decay.

3. Strength and stability
Inlays and onlays can not only strengthen a tooth which has suffered minor decay, they also provide a certain level of restored stability to the surface of the treated tooth.

4. Easy cleaning
Inlays/onlays are tailored to fit your tooth precisely. This means your treated tooth will be easy to clean and maintain.

5. Protect a weak tooth
An onlay is strong enough to protect the weak parts of your tooth with minimal reshaping of the healthy tooth structure.

The Procedure

Typically, inlays/onlays require two visits to Carnegie Dental Group. The first visit is when one of our friendly dentists will prepare the damaged tooth. A mould is taken and sent to the lab, in the meantime a temporary will be placed over the prepared tooth until your next visit. The second visit is when the temporary restoration is removed and the more permanent inlay/onlay is placed.

Inlays/onlays can be made from composite resin, porcelain or gold materials. Which one we use for your restoration will depend on which tooth needs to be treated. When you visit Carnegie Dental Group one of our skilled dentists will assess your oral health and determine the best course of action for you.
